TLS, or transport layer security, provides a basic level of information security by encrypting the link between one mail server and another. Once a secure channel between two companies has been established, communications between them is protected with no further effort required.
TLS is an optional service with AppRiver's SecureTide Spam & Virus Filtering that is available by purchasing AppRiver's SmartHost service.
Going Beyond TLS
AppRiver provides TLS for clients who require encrypted server-to-server connections. For those who need user-to-user encryption, the company recommends CipherPost Email Encryption service.
CipherPost is user-based and user friendly. Delivered through AppRiver’s trusted Software as a Service (SaaS) delivery platform, the CipherPost encryption system enables end-to-end, content level encryption of email and mobile messages.
One key difference between CipherPost and TLS is that the connection does not have to be encrypted for the information to remain private. The moment a user presses the “Send Secure” button, the message is immediately encrypted and remains that way from sender to recipient. This option becomes a trusted communication tool and offers end-user proof of secure delivery.

Approaching IT security with multiple levels of protection ensures your data is kept confidential. By using AppRiver’s CipherPost Email Encryption along with a TLS-supported server connection, users may rest assured that even if the “Send Secure” button is mistakenly ignored, their message will still remain secure while in transit from server to server.
Additionally, AppRiver’s Secure Exchange Hosting service allows business owners to automatically activate TLS with the option to add-on CipherPost Email Encryption for a very low per-user fee. Hosted Exchange eliminates the headaches and expense of managing your own mail servers in-house and gives you fast, reliable access to email from your desktop, laptop, tablet or other mobile devices. And all of these are secured within and delivered from SSAE 16 and ISAE 3402 Type 2 audited datacenters.

Standard email (without TLS or end-to-end encryption) is much like a postcard. Anyone who can see the message in transit can read it.
