Michael Murdoch Chief Executive Officer & President

Michael Murdoch

Mike Murdoch is an innovator, an entrepreneur and a leader in the highly competitive high-tech marketplace. At present, he serves as CEO of AppRiver, a company he co-founded in 2002, which is now recognized as one of the leading software-as-a-service (SaaS) firms for businesses worldwide. With more than 25 years of business and product development experience, Murdoch has led AppRiver's explosive growth in the e-mail and Web security market segments. The company currently serves 47,000 businesses with more than eight million mailboxes around the globe. AppRiver's rapid rise to industry-leader status, along with its award-winning service led Ernst & Young to name Murdoch its Florida Entrepreneur of the Year® winner for 2009.

AppRiver was not Murdoch's first entrepreneurial venture. In the late 1990s, he co-founded a company called WaveNet, a full-service integrator specializing in network infrastructure and security solutions. With Murdoch at the helm, WaveNet expanded to several locations in the Southeastern United States. He also held management positions at National Business Group, Inc. (NBG), a nationwide VAR 500 systems integrator that was later acquired by Forsythe Technology, and MOM Corporation, a micro-to-mainframe systems pioneer.

Murdoch studied business at the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia, USA.

Joel Smith Chief Technology Officer

Joel Smith

Joel Smith co-founded AppRiver with CEO Michael Murdoch in 2002, bringing with him more than a decade of experience in the technology sector where he focused primarily on network security and e-mail efficiency. Since AppRiver's inception, Smith has made it a priority to create and deliver mission-critical applications via a SaaS model. Working alongside a creative 25-person R&D staff, Smith has led the charge to bring secure messaging and Web solutions to more than 47,000 customers worldwide.

Since AppRiver's earliest days, Smith has played an integral part in the cloud computing revolution. Businesses are always on the lookout for ways to operate more efficiently with a secure infrastructure they can rely on since e-mail and Web security threats continue to evolve and develop on a daily basis. With AppRiver, any business is granted access to enterprise-grade applications for a fixed cost per employee per year, which is usually a fraction of the traditional in-house IT costs. The ability to adopt on-demand services on a pay-as-you-go basis gives each AppRiver customer greater cost-controls and flexibility.

Smith continues to successfully navigate his IT department through this "revolution" by offering innovative products and technologies. He pays close attention to customer feedback and network administrator needs, and by listening to his customers and analyzing the market, Smith develops forward-thinking technology projects that effectively meet today's growing market demands. Prior to AppRiver, Smith launched Plugit.com, LLC, a successful hosting and Web application company in Pensacola, Florida. At Plugit.com, he architected a scalable and profitable hosting platform that supported a diverse mix of small, medium and large enterprise customers.

Smith studied business at the University of West Florida and completed his bachelor's degree at Troy University.

Scott Cutler Chief Operating Officer

Scott Cutler

Scott Cutler is a seasoned and proven leader in the high-tech industry who now serves as AppRiver's Chief Operating Officer. In this role, he oversees the development, design, and overall improvement of AppRiver's e-mail and Web security solutions. He is also responsible for day-to-day operational activities, including expense, cost and margin control, revenue and sales growth, and monthly, quarterly and annual financial goal management. One testament to Cutler's effectiveness is AppRiver's 93 percent customer retention rate since inception, an incredible record in the highly competitive e-mail and Web security business.

Before taking on his challenging role at AppRiver, Cutler was Director of North American Sales, Eastern Division at Connected Corporation, a leading provider of storage software for automated protection, archiving and recovery of distributed data.

Cutler has also held positions at National Business Group, Inc. (NBG), Eicon Technology Inc., and Microcom, Inc., where he secured a number of Fortune 500 clients across industries such as technology, telecommunications, travel, and financial services.

Cutler received a B.A. in Economics and a B.S.C. in Physical Science from the University of Guelph in Ontario, Canada.

Doug Coleman Chief Financial Officer

Doug Coleman

AppRiver CFO Doug Coleman has built his career on helping businesses use technology to gain a competitive advantage in the marketplace. One of his first big wins was designing, developing and deploying all of the point-of-sale and integrated accounting systems that enabled a small Atlanta-based retailer to grow from 16 stores to more than 600 locations nationwide.

Doug then leveraged this experience to build his own company, EasyBooks, LLC, which operated as the virtual accounting department and back office for more than 100 companies along the Gulf Coast. The success of EasyBooks was soon noticed by WAVEnet Technologies, which purchased the company in 2009. Doug was named chief financial officer, implementing internal systems, controls and procedures that helped increase the company’s profits by 230 percent.

In 2012, Doug came to AppRiver in the role of controller to help lead our transition to a new back office software system. In Feburary of 2015, he was promoted to CFO with responsibility for all of the company’s accounting and financial management for both the US and EMEA operations.

Doug holds a degree in accounting from Clemson University.

Rocco Donnino Executive Vice President of Corporate Development

As Executive Vice President for Corporate Development, Donnino leverages his combined expertise in sales, strategic business planning, corporate and OEM development to deliver strong and sustainable revenue gains for AppRiver's current and future growth. In his role, he is focused on increasing corporate value and revenue by developing and growing AppRiver's global reach through strategic partner channels, OEM licensing, as well as mergers and acquisition.

Donnino comes to AppRiver from AVG technologies where as SVP of Global Strategic Alliances, he was responsible for the development and execution of AVG's worldwide business development for the consumer and SMB market. His leadership helped the company grow and build strategic alliances with market leaders such as Google, Yahoo, Zynga, Microsoft, VeriSign, AMD, HSBC, Opera, and Virgin Mobile. Donnino also initiated new AVG product/OEM technologies that helped AVG reach new and emerging markets such as SaaS, PC optimization, managed security services, hosted web and email services and mobile security.

Donnino joined AVG from McAfee, where he was responsible for global OEM sales and strategic partnerships in the US and EMEA. He has previously held executive sales, channel and business development positions at Secure Computing, Shavlik Technologies, SurfControl, Microsoft and was among the earliest employees of Sybari Software, which was later acquired by Microsoft.

Donnino has a BA in Sports Medicine and Physical Education from Ohio Wesleyan University and has participated in a variety of speaking engagements, and seminars on technology, partnerships and sales/channel communication.

Jeff Malone Vice President of Sales

Jeff Malone

Jeff Malone, a proven sales leader in the high-tech industry, can call on more than 20 years of technology, security, and channel development experience in his role as Vice President of Sales. At AppRiver, Malone is responsible for driving revenue growth, as well as managing the sales team and directing the development of the sales department. With AppRiver's core business of delivering managed business services over the Internet, Malone believes that developing and nurturing strong relationships with customers is key to keeping them for the long term. He points to AppRiver's 93-percent customer retention rate as proof that the company's Phenomenal Care™ model is well-suited for the email and Web security space.

Prior to joining AppRiver, Malone was the Director of Enterprise Sales, SE, at Trusteer, an endpoint cybercrime solutions company which was later acquired by IBM. At Trusteer, Malone helped strengthen the company's southeastern district by working closely with clients throughout the sales cycle and maintaining those relationships throughout the life of the contracts.

Before Trusteer, Malone worked in both sales and sales management at companies like VSS Monitoring (Acquired by Danaher), National Business Group (NBG), and Forsythe Solutions Group (FSG). At NBG and FSG, Malone won the prestigious President's Club Award numerous times, solidifying his reputation as a sales leader.

Malone earned his B.A. in Management at Jacksonville State University.

Michael Hamstra Vice President of Marketing

Michael Hamstra

Michael Hamstra joined the AppRiver team in June of 2007 to lead the company’s marketing efforts, including its successful launch of new product lines, including SecureSurf™ and CipherPost Pro™. Michael also developed and implemented the go-to-market strategy for AppRiver’s Office 365 offering and managed the company’s PR and marketing work during its expansion into Europe. In his role, Michael directs all marketing, brand management, public relations and trade show efforts and is responsible for AppRiver's online presence and advertising. His role has expanded now to include oversight of AppRiver’s training team as well as all public outreach efforts.

Michael came to AppRiver from Atlanta where he worked in technology-based marketing for both hardware and software systems, accumulating more than two decades of experience in the field. In 1998, he helped launch CTX South (a division of Walnut, California-based CTX International) that quickly grew to become a multimillion dollar operation. He also led the marketing efforts for ProSys Information Systems, a professional computer services company and MediTech Media, a global marketing/medical communications firm before coming to AppRiver.

He serves on the board of the Gulf Breeze Chamber of Commerce and volunteers his time with the Greater Pensacola Chamber as well.

Chris Cain Vice President of Software Development

Chris Cain

Even before Chris Cain officially joined the AppRiver team in 2003, he had already designed much of the company’s proprietary spam and virus filtering software. In fact, he has been the primary architect and lead developer on many of AppRiver’s product offerings and management systems. Since joining the company, Chris has helped build and lead a 30+ person software development team that now competes with some of the most well-known companies in the world.

A veteran software developer, Chris began writing code at the age of 12 and naturally progressed to more and more complex systems. His professional career began in 1994, working with technical audio ad storage, retrieval and delivery over satellite-based ad systems. By 1997, his experience led him to a new career developing a billing and customer care platform for a local telephone carrier.

Since then, Chris has held a number of leadership positions in software development and design. He became AppRiver’s vice president of software development in May of 2013, but he continues to work in the trenches, ensuring that AppRiver maintains its ethic of innovation and continuous improvement.
